According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2), all land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,107 people, 1,093 households, and 977 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,712.5 people per square mile (660.7/km²). There were 1,671 housing units at an average density of 696.7 per square mile (268.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 67.35% White, 0.02% Black, 0.12% Indigenous American, 0.12% Asian, 31.19% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 93.21% of the population.
There were 1,093 households out of which 57.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.8% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 10.6% were non-families. 9.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.76 and the average family size was 4.01.
Palmview is served by the La Joya Independent School District. Palmview High School is one of the two new high schools in the district built to accommodate the large student population residing in the area. It is located on the boundary between Palmview and Mission, Texas.
