Rio Hondo is a city in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,356 at the 2010 census. It may be included as part of the Brownsville–Harlingen–Raymondville and the Matamoros–Brownsville metropolitan areas.
Rio Hondo is located in north-central Cameron County at 26°14′4″N 97°34′53″W (26.234451, -97.581364). It is 9 miles (14 km) east of Harlingen and 28 miles (45 km) north of Brownsville.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2), of which 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2), or 7.09%, is water.
There were 787 housing units at an average density of 565.1 per square mile (218.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 77.19% White, 0.05% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 20.49% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 82.75% of the population.
There were 588 households out of which 41.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% were non-families. 17.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.30 and the average family size was 3.78.
